You know, I really do like a lot of what Ron Paul says when it comes to the U.S. Constitution, our government, spending, and capitalism; but then he always has to go and blow it … with his fantasy world views on foreign policy and national defense.
I am sorry … but Anwar al-Awlaki gave up his American citizenship when he chose to become a terrorist and commit the worst kind of treason … plotting the death of thousands of American citizens.
Are we supposed to risk the lives of a dozen or so Navy SEALS to try to capture this piece of crap, just so some terrorist friendly lawyer can make a few million dollars defending him in some terrorist friendly Court … like maybe the 9th Circuit Court in California? If an armed drone can end his threat to our nation and its citizen’s safety without needlessly risking the lives of our soldiers … then so be it … al-Awlaki gets a “drone enema.”
Maybe if Anwar al -Awlaki was living in say Boston or San Francisco … it would be different; and we could arrest him without launching a major military offensive. Then by all means: liberals could read him his Miranda rights, and try him. Then then Ninth Circuit Court could make a hero out of him and slap his wrist. But that fact is that al-Awlaki is (or excuse me … was) in Yemen. And … there is the real world/ fantasy difference folks!
Speaking of California, the left-wing loonies in charge of that once great state are at it again. The state is already bankrupt and want to cut medicare payments to save money, but at the same time … they are going to pay $10,000 to each trucker in California (or who drives into California) to aid them in changing out a perfectly good diesel engine that meets federal emissions standards for a new “California-friendly” diesel engine that meets their state’s special emission standards. One owner of a small trucking business in Minnesota had to shell out over $40,000 to change out perfectly good diesel engines in his trucks just so he could deliver loads to California. Hmmm … $40,00 … wouldn’t that have been just about enough to put another American to work? Sheer California madness! We should just let that state regulate itself out of existence …

If Herman Cain said the same thing, then I would disagree with him as well. You cannot take up arms against your country, wage war on its people, and then seek protection under its laws!
Before you call a conservative on “conserving the rule of law”, you should know what the law is! Anwar al-Awlaki gave up his right of citizenship and its protections. According to the Consulate General of the United States, these are the causes for loss of citizenship (see item 3):

You prove to be rather short-sighted in your understanding of the implications Awlaki’s death has. The war on terror has destroyed our Constitution and the rule of law has gone out the window. For someone who claims to be a patriotic American, I would encourage to study the things our Government is doing under the guise of protecting us with greater scrutiny. If Americans must lose their Constitutional freedoms in the name of defending them, than what are they fighting for in the first place?

Killing an American citizen without the due process afforewarded them by the 5th amendment of our Constitution under any circumstances is an impeachable offense. It goes against the Oath that our soldiers, who die in the name of protecting our liberties take, our political representatives, and our president. This is not the 1st time that President Obama subverted our Constitution either. He did so when he bombed Libya without a formal declaration of war with Congressional approval.
In order for you to be as patriotic as you say you are… I would encourage you to do what you can to ensure our soldiers don’t die in vain, as they witness our Government tear down the very rule of law that they are expected to die defending.
Theres a reason why Ron Paul gets more donations than any other presidential candidate.

I know all about Ben Franklin’s quote and have used it many times myself. The war on terror, like every war in the past, has caused some temporary, but necessary (and yes, sometimes troublesome) compromises to insure national security and to allow us to track terrorist activities. These compromises need to be carefully monitored, changed, and/or eliminated as needed. At the same time, hamstringing our national security agencies, in the name of your view of “perfect freedom” would leave the U.S. defenseless against an enemy that uses cyber space, cell phones, and computers to wage war on us. How many thousands of other Americans would die in terrorist attacks that went undiscovered due to the inability to monitor a known terrorist’s cell phone calls, intercept data transfers between Al Qaeda cells, or to track terrorist-related money transfers around the globe? I am an IT professional working on an M.S. in Information security and I know something about what is required to do these kinds of things.
This is a new kind of war (as in not just tanks charging across picturesque European landscapes) … and unfortunately, we have had to learn as we go. The only other real alternative is to give in to terrorism, and surrender to an eventual global Caliphate. Would that make you happier? Where would your prized constitutional freedoms be then? By all means … keep tabs on government abuses of power … call them on it … raise hell over it! Stand up and fight if necessary and when needed! But don’t let your libertarian ideological stubborness doom the country … just as Obama’s left-wing socialist ideology does.
I repeat, according to the laws of our nation, when a citizen takes up arms against this country and plots the death of thousands of its citizens as a member of an enemy force (i.e. Al Qaeda), that citizen has effectively forefeited any claim to citizenship. Your arguement against killing Americans without due process of law (while I totally agree with you) does not apply in this case! al-Awlaki, when he chose to fight for and help lead Al Qaeda; effectively renounced his U.S. citizenship. He is no longer an American (and I thought only liberals never let the facts get in the way of a good story). He is no longer protected by “due Process!” He is simply an enemy combatant.
Therefore sending a SEAL team over to Yemen to try and “arrest” al-Awlaki and then read him his “Miranda Rights”… may have caused that SEAL team to “die in vain.” That is as bad an idea as trying terrorists in our civilian courts. It is expensive, short-sighted, dangerous and yes … stupid!! Why do you think even Obama’s idiotic cronies gave up on trying terrorists in civilian courts and went back to military tribunals?
It is sometimes very difficult to not let enthusiasm for for a candidate, or ideology, blind us to the fact that, no matter how constitutionally-minded and patriotic we are; our ideas, decisions, and policies still have to work in the real world. The world we actually live in … and not the world we wished we lived in. That’s how left-wing liberals think! If we, as conservatives, can’t see the difference … we are no better than the progressive, left-wing socialists like Obama, et al. We are simply on the other end of the political spectrum and just as dangerous to the country.
Despite your enthusiam for Ron Paul (and I really do agree with a lot of what he says), it is his inability to grasp this ideological-world / real-world difference that has kept him from being elected in the past and is what (at least in my opinion) makes his campaign untenable in the 2012 election as well … despite you and his many other loyal and committed followers.
I meant donations from military, and while we’re talking about donations… its also why you’ll witness him and his supporters break the single day fundraising record of $6 million they set back in 08′ on the 19th.
It is always harder to stand by your convictions rather than jump on either side’s bandwagon. As soon as you make a stand on an issue, half the world is lined up against you! If you stand for a great America; able to compete,thrive, and remain strong in the modern world, you have both far left-wing and far right-wing radicals against you. Oh well! I will not go quietly into the darkness … of either side!
