Milan Marko contacted me through Fiverr.com to write a book description for the new English version of his book, FOREX: Proven Trading Strategies For Financial Freedom. Marko published the original in German in 2016. Until I read his book, I had no idea what Forex trading is. His book is very informative and quite interesting. Another Five Star Review for Serpents Underfoot

What did I like? This is the first book that I have read from this author, but I was struck with the realism of the storyline. He truly knew his subject and characters and brought them to life with the stroke of his pen/computer. The reality of the storyline hit me like a ton of bricks. It seems like this was written as an episode of today’s life. Being an animal lover and knowing a little about working dogs, I was very impressed with the information and the use of his K9 partner, it was awesome.


What will you like? Extreme action, passionate characters, powerful storyline, well written, strong and yet touching with many lives put into action and learning curves. Well thought out and shows the intense research in every page from the martial arts to the life of the military. Action and reality make this an explosive action thriller for your next read.

Adirondack Bear Tales

In addition, keep an eye out for my upcoming new release! It is a wonderful collection of Adirondack Bear Tales based on real life encounters with black bears in the Adirondack Park of upstate New York.  These delightful family stories are enjoyable for adults and suitable for all ages. They would even make great bedtime stories for young children. It is not a long book … 11 short stories … but the stories vary between humorous, exciting, and even sad. Above all, they are very entertaining.

The World War II Heroics of a Very Special Ship

Luck Lady: A very special ship

What makes the USS Santa Fe such a special ship? On March 19, 1945, a Japanese bomber dropped two 500-pound bombs through the deck of the USS Franklin, killing hundreds of officers and enlisted men, and thrusting the lives of nearly 3,000 other American seamen and aviators into mortal danger. As the Franklin listed dangerously near capsizing, the light cruiser USS Santa Fe, nicknamed the Lucky Lady, bellied up alongside her flaming hull and attempted the most daring rescue in U.S. naval history.

Lucky Lady tells the tale of  the legendary World War II careers of the USS Franklin (the most decorated naval vessel of the war) and the Santa Fe (unparalleled record of wartime service while avoiding casualties) through the eyes of the men on board. This tale is told from the perspective of the highest levels of rank and flying altitude to deep within the ships engine room. Through the bloody years of the Pacific War (from Pearl Harbor to the surrender of Japan) the crew members of these ships experienced first-hand all the horrors of war.

Close to home

A friend of mine, whose father served on the USS Santa Fe, loaned me this book. And I must say, I greatly enjoyed the read.

Sailors believed the Santa Fe to be an unlucky ship.  Christened with a bottle of water rather than Champagne, such as is the usual case. The bottle of water came from the Santa Fe River … blessed by a Catholic priest. This, of course, caused a good deal of muttering among superstitious sailors. But as it turned out, the Santa Fe led a charmed life. This ship and crew’s heroic efforts to rescue the sailors of the USS Franklin is the stuff of legends.

This is first and foremost a history, It goes into great character detail and development. You get to know the officers and the sailors assigned to this ship. From the Aleutians to Pearl Harbor and the war in the Pacific, this book tells their tale. It’s pages are full of WW II Naval action. However, if you are strictly an action junkie, it might be a bit of a slow read. On the other hand, if you love history, well-developed characters, and detailed, historic accuracy … this is a book for you. I highly recommend this book and give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Jeffery R Cox Publishes New WWII Non-fiction!

Jeffery R Cox’s Morning Star, Midnight Sun is on my reading list!

John Purvis recently reviewed the non-fiction WWII book by Jeffery R Cox, called, Morning Star, Midnight Sun.

John’s review of this book intrigued me, so I went to Amazon.com and took a look, and read some additional reader reviews. It has a great overall rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars after a total of 17 Customer Reviews, with 59% being 5 Stars and an additional 18% being 4 Stars. Definitely, a strong showing since its publication date of February 22, 2018.

I do love reading WWII history. My other big favorite is Vietnam War history. This is probably fairly apparent if you read my novel, Serpents Underfoot. Anyway, I guess I will be adding Morning Star, Midnight Sun to my Audible collection. Military history, in general, has always been fascinating to me. As a youngster, I received many books on military history as Christmas gifts. Now I am even experimenting with military flash fiction! Who would have thought of such a thing!

If you like WWII history, you should check this book out. You might also want to check out some of the other reviews on John’s Notes; especially if you are a Mac user!

  • Writing a good thriller is mostly about the pace you set for the story. The way all the pieces fall into place, how you build suspense, how believable are your characters, the setting. It’s not an easy job.
  • D.C. Gilbert achieves this with style. The story flows smoothly. Easy and fast to read, which is a good thing when it comes to thrillers. There’s nothing that stands in the way of the story.
  • Also, the author does a fine job of detailing the world. Put differently, he knows his stuff. And you can tell. It’s always refreshing to read a book written by someone who knows what they’re writing about.
  • So, yeah, this is a great book. Well worth the time.
