Holy Moly … I’m an artist!

Serpents Underfoot just received a 5-star review from Literary Titan!

Here us what they had to say.

  • If you are a fan of thrilling action  adventure novels, you are going to enjoy reading Serpents Underfoot, by DC Gilbert.
  • Author DC Gilbert is an artist when it comes to leaving the reader captivated and yearning for more at the end of every chapter.
  • Readers are treated to a good dose of action, but always with a unique buildup that always ensures the action oriented pieces have a reason, and because of this the novel feels … more authentic,
  • The story never loses focus on its characters who are consistently engaging. With multiple exotic locations throughout the novel, I always felt like the team, and the story, was on the move.
  • Serpents Underfoot is a fantastic start to The JD Cordell Action Series.

Kirkus Review: Serpents Underfoot

In for a penny …

My original plan, at the suggestion of my editor, was to submit Montagnard to Kirkus Reviews; which I did. A few days later, I got an email from Katerina at Kirkus, suggesting that, since Montagnard was a sequel, I should let them also review Serpents Underfoot so they would have a better picture of the story as well as me as an author.

While it made sense, anyone who has looked into Kirkus knows that 1) they are brutally honest, and 2) they are expensive. That is because they are the gold standard for book reviews and a good review from Kirkus can open doors and reach a large number of influencers like publishers, agents, foreign publishers, film executives, librarians, and booksellers.

I was hesitant because, while I know Serpents Underfoot is a pretty darn good read (its gotten lots of good reviews), it was also self-edited, and I was sure I would get raked over the coals. It seems, though, that this was not to be the case! Anyway, to make a long story short, I ponied up to have Serpents Underfoot reviewed as well. That was on June 16th. I received the “review completed” notification email today!

Here are a few excerpts …

Resonant characters propel this consistently gripping terrorist tale.

In this debut thriller, a Navy SEAL tries to uncover a terrorist plot.

… Gilbert’s action-oriented tale is dense with characters and personal histories … myriad subplots and backstories are often enthralling.

… All of the story characters are well developed, producing genuine shocks when certain individuals die. The author writes in an unadorned
prose that keeps the plot moving at a steady beat.

… the finale is … exhilarating.

Literary Titan: Montagnard

It must be shameless self-promotion week!

However, I can’t help it. My editor suggested I send Montagnard to Literary Titan, which while not yet as big as Kirkus, is fast becoming a leader in literary reviews and awards. So … I did.

And 45 days later, this was the result …

Here are a few highlights:

Montagnard has all the elements I look for in a good action-adventure story.

… This is where the novel really shines. JD Cordell is electrifying … I really enjoyed the depth of JD’s character.

The action in this novel is relentless and well detailed.

Holy Moly! Got My First Five Star Review for Serpents Underfoot

First Five Star Review for Serpents Underfoot

Great Jumping Jehoshaphat!  I just got my first Five Star Review for the paperback version of Serpents Underfoot, which is identical to the Kindle versions, so I am claiming that it counts equally for both. Thank you to Lee Sassman for that awesome review. Much appreciated!! I have set a goal of getting 50 such reviews … so only 49 more to go!

Five Star ReviewAlso, for all you dog lovers out there … another hero in my book is a Belgian Malinois named Ajax. A SEAL Trident Warrior, of the four-legged variety. A K9. Ajax was originally supposed to be a German Shepherd like Sophie (my GSD). Doing the research, however, I discovered that, while German Shepherds are often used in the military, the SEALs preferred the Belgian Malinois.

They are very similar to the German Shepherd in attributes and abilities, but weigh in about 10 pounds less on average. I do see this could be a rather big factor when jumping out of an airplane or helicopter with a dog strapped to your chest! This picture clearly show the comparison. The GSD is definitely a heavier dog, but the are indeed very similar! I’m not sure I would want to have either one chomp down hard on the forearm and drag me to the ground. I can’t help but think that would hurt a lot!

So much to Sophie’s chagrin, Ajax became a Belgian Malinois.  I guess I will have to make that up to her somehow.  Maybe some extra special dog treats, a new squeaky ball, or a day at the lake!!

I think you should gat a copy! I hope you will!  It might even make a good gift for the holidays. And, help me get those last 49 good reviews! Currently available in paperback and Kindle.

Serpents Underfoot Update: Paperback Released & Kindle Updated

Serpents Underfoot Update: Paperback Available!

Serpents Underfoot UpdateA Serpents Underfoot Update! Well, it took a bit … but the paperback, along with the updated Kindle version, are both now available on Amazon.com. Looks like a few people have already ordered paperback copies and to those people I say, “Thank you very much!”  I hope anyone who reads this novel really  enjoys it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I think for a first crack at this author stuff, it went pretty well! And, if you do enjoy the book, please give it a positive review on Amazone.com.

Also, did you know that if you buy the paperback version, you can get the kindle version for only 99 cents!

Now, isn’t that just the most fantastic and amazing deal of a lifetime? I think so ….

I like the new cover, but did not have the option for the Red, White and Blue text with their cover designer. Guess sooner or later I will have to invest in Photoshop!  It is kind of fun doing this things yourself if you have the time and the means!

I will be scheduling book signings and other such events in the future. There is a mailing list sign-up on my Author’s Home Page. I do hate spam (not the kind in the can, I actually kind of like that), so I promise not to spam subscribers! However, I will let you know of upcoming events and new releases, etc. Also, I will try to figure out how to put some event calendar on my website as well.

Onward and upward!

This has been a real journey, a great deal of work, and I learned a great deal. I will finish the hardcover edition next! Then I will start on my next book project, but more about that later.
